We cannot emphasize enough how crucial it is to articulate and know your venture’s reason for being beyond generating a profit; its purpose. It matters that you get this understanding about your work and let it directly shape what you do and how you talk about it.
If you haven’t already, we highly recommend that you read or listen through Start With Why by Simon Sinek. It makes a compelling case for a deeply true and authentic purpose in business.
Essentialism: The Disciplined Pursuit of Less
In Essentialism, the author Greg McKeown talks about the usefulness of having a process to determine how you should respond to opportunities. He shares that making our criteria for decisions both selective and explicit affords us a systematic tool for discerning what’s essential and filtering out the things that are not.

The D.C. Bar Pro Bono Center offers low/no-cost legal help to small business owners and prospective entrepreneurs who operate in economically disadvantaged areas or who have limited financial resources. Volunteer attorneys help review legal documents and answer questions about starting a business, taxation, real estate leases, employment law, and other legal issues common to small business owners.
The clinics provide current and aspiring business owners with an opportunity to speak with an attorney one-on-one.
