Living with Purpose, Not Performance
Scripture continually points us toward a life of faithfulness rather than a life of performance. Colossians 3:23-24 reminds us:
“Whatever you do, work heartily, as for the Lord and not for men, knowing that from the Lord you will receive the inheritance as your reward. You are serving the Lord Christ.”
This verse redirects our attention. Our work is not for human applause but for God’s glory. He looks at why we do what we do and how we treat others in the process. Are we driven by love, humility, and faithfulness, or by the need for validation?
The Heart Matters Most
When the prophet Samuel went to anoint a king, God reminded him:
“The Lord does not look at the things people look at. People look at the outward appearance, but the Lord looks at the heart.” (1 Samuel 16:7)
God values the condition of our hearts over the success of our ventures. A person with a pure heart and unwavering commitment to Him is far more valuable in His eyes than one with a long list of achievements but no integrity.
This doesn’t mean ambition or hard work is wrong. It means that the motivation behind our efforts matters. Are we seeking to glorify God or elevate ourselves?
Faithfulness Over Flashiness
The parable of the talents (Matthew 25:14-30) illustrates God’s desire for us to steward well what He gives us. Yet, the emphasis is not on the amount returned but on the faithfulness of the servant. Whether the servant gained five talents or two, the Master’s response was the same:
“Well done, good and faithful servant.”
God’s approval isn’t based on how much we achieve but on our obedience and faithfulness to Him.
Why How We Live Matters
God calls us to live a life that reflects His character—one of love, mercy, and humility. Micah 6:8 declares:
“He has shown you, O mortal, what is good. And what does the Lord require of you? To act justly and to love mercy and to walk humbly with your God.”
Achieving great things without justice, mercy, and humility misses the mark. It’s the small, daily choices to love God and others that truly matter.
Redefining Success
When we align our lives with God’s priorities, success is redefined. Instead of chasing worldly achievements, we pursue:
- Faithful relationships: Loving others as Christ loves us (John 13:34).
- Integrity: Doing what is right, even when no one is watching (Proverbs 10:9).
- Obedience: Trusting and following God, even when it’s hard (John 14:15).
God is less interested in the size of your bank account or the prestige of your title and more concerned about how you steward your time, resources, and relationships to reflect His love and grace.
A Legacy of Faith
Ultimately, when our lives come to an end, it won’t be our achievements that echo through eternity. It will be the love we showed, the faith we lived, and the lives we impacted for God’s kingdom. As Paul wrote in 2 Timothy 4:7:
“I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith.”
This is the legacy God calls us to leave—a life lived for His glory, not ours.
Final Thoughts
God cares deeply about how you live your life. While the world measures success by accomplishments, God measures it by faithfulness, love, and obedience. Choose today to live in a way that honors Him, focusing less on what you achieve and more on who you are becoming in Christ. As you do, you’ll find true fulfillment and joy, knowing that you are living a life that pleases the One who created you.
