Why Entrepreneurs Need More Than Bible Study: The Power of Dwelling in the Word

I recently heard something at church that stopped me in my tracks.

“Dwelling in the Bible is more about presence and receptivity. Rather than analyzing, it means sitting with a passage, letting it ‘read you,’ and opening yourself up to hear how God might be addressing you personally.”

I’d never really taken the time to sit with the difference between studying Scripture and dwelling in it. But as someone who constantly walks with entrepreneurs and visionaries — people who live in the tension between purpose and productivity — this insight hit home.

It helped me understand something I’d sensed but couldn’t quite name: that what often seems like opposing views in others is actually just different ways of experiencing God’s presence.

And for those of us with an entrepreneurial mindset, that’s a critical distinction to grasp.

The Entrepreneurial Mind Craves Clarity

Entrepreneurial doesn’t just mean business ownership. It’s a mindset. A posture of taking full ownership of your ideas, dreams, and assignments. It means you’re not waiting for permission to show up—you’re moving forward with conviction.

That mindset is powerful. But it also carries a weight.

We tend to live in the realm of strategy and stewardship. We plan, we act, we execute. So when we approach Scripture, we often bring the same energy. We study. We analyze. We look for insights we can apply.

And while there’s nothing wrong with that—study is good and necessary—if that’s all we do, we risk missing the deeper invitation.

Dwelling: The Missing Practice

Dwelling in the Word is different.

It’s not about extracting wisdom. It’s about encountering God.
It’s not about mastering a concept. It’s about being mastered by His presence.

Dwelling invites us to slow down. To breathe. To let the Word read us.

And for entrepreneurs who are always thinking ahead, this can feel counterintuitive. Maybe even unproductive. But the fruit of dwelling is not in what we produce—it’s in who we become.

Two Ways of Encountering God

As I’ve reflected more on this, I’ve realized that people aren’t always operating out of opposition. Some study. Some dwell. Some analyze. Some abide.

Neither is wrong. In fact, both are essential.

But for the visionary who’s constantly moving, dwelling may be the very thing God is calling you to reclaim.

Because study helps you know God’s ways.
Dwelling helps you know God’s heart.

And when those two come together? You don’t just build things—you build with Him.

A Simple Practice to Begin

If this resonates with you, here’s a simple way to step into dwelling this week:

  1. Choose one passage of Scripture—just a few verses.
  2. Read it slowly. Out loud if you can.
  3. Sit with it. No agenda. No notebook.
  4. Ask: “God, what are You saying to me here?”
  5. Be still. Let the silence speak.

You don’t have to turn it into a revelation for others. Let it be formation for you.

Final Thoughts

Entrepreneurship requires clarity, courage, and consistency. But more than that, it requires connection—to God, to purpose, and to the people you’re called to serve.

So yes, study the Word. Dig deep. Ask good questions.
But don’t forget to dwell.

Because the wisdom you need won’t always come from searching harder.
Sometimes, it comes from slowing down long enough to listen.
